General Remarks

Biomedical and Clinical Engineers are generally relied upon to maintain and repair a very wide range of equipment and systems.  It is difficult and generally not cost-effective to keep these individuals trained and equipped to support every technology in the hospital.  Hence, the trend to outsource specialized services which require unique knowledge, experience and equipment to perform them properly. 

These individuals typically only support the "portable" or "mobile" equipment which falls under the "Medical Equipment Management Plan".  However, it is important that they have at least a basic understanding of how IPS systems function in order to narrow down certain problems.

Many times, these folks will get the call from Surgery when a LIM goes into alarm.  Either individually, or with a Facilities person, a trip to the OR is made to determine the cause of the alarm.  See Isolated Power.
